Mass Hearing/Vision Screenings at Due West:
The mass hearing and vision screenings will be conducted in September for all first and fourth graders, and those students who are new to Cobb County School District.  The date and times will be announced when plans are finalized. If your child wears glasses, please make sure he/she brings them to school on the day of their
screening.

The hearing and vision screening program for the students of Cobb County School District is a means to suggest further care for those students who may have a problem with vision or hearing.  Please understand that this screening is not a substitute for a complete hearing or vision examination.

The Snellen vision screening chart used in most schools, screens only for distance vision problems.  We use this kind of screening at Due West for our mass vision screenings.  If a student has difficulty with reading or close vision, the Snellen chart screening may not alert to the problem.  Due West also has a Titmus vision screening machine that has the potential to alert to both near and distance vision problems.  This screening is used on an individual basis, as it is a more extensive and time-consuming screening.

The current hearing screening is designed only as a screening and can indicate possible hearing problems.  Cobb County Audiology Services is located at 6975 Cobb International Boulevard, Kennesaw, GA  30152.  The phone number to call for an appointment is 678-581-7400.

Staff trained by the school system will be screening students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 for both hearing and vision.  All entering kindergarteners will be expected to present proof of eye, ear and dental screening on Form 3300 at the time of registration.  The form 3300 must be dated no earlier than August 1st of the prior year.  The Cobb County Health Department or a private physician can provide this screening

If you suspect your child may have a hearing or vision problem and your child is not in one of the grades listed for mass screening, please speak to your child’s teacher or school nurse about obtaining a screening at school. For a hearing/vision screening referral, a signed, parent permission form is required.
